My husband anchored the frame into the wall studs on both walls. Also, it's resting on the ladder itself for extra support away from the wall. I think he did a great job. It's nice because it doesn't take up as much room as a standard bunk & isn't too close to the ceiling fan because it is only a little higher than the chair rail. The foot of D's bed fits under it perpendicularly. The kids are thrilled with it! It leaves them a lot more floor space to play in their room.

Customized Bunk Bed
Since we live in a 2-bedroom townhouse, we have to be somewhat creative with our space. We designed a bunkbed that would fit our preschooler's smaller mattress. It's like a built-in loft bed.

Awesome bed! What a great idea. And the hubby totally looks tough with the drill. Hee hee!
What an incredible idea!
According to the stats on my blog, this is the most frequently read post. I think that shows how many people out there are looking for space-saving ideas in kids' rooms.
If you click on the label "space saving kids beds" you'll see another bed my husband built to fit the kid-sized IKEA mattresses.
Also, I just wanted to say (since this is linked to someone's pintrest board who didn't think it looked safe) that we did not have any safety problems with this. Even if the preschooler had fallen off (which she never did- there is a low rail) she would have landed on the bed below. Our son's bed had the footboard under the loft bed so he didn't hit his head on the one above while sitting up in his bed. It was built very sturdy and secure.
Could kids fall off, hit their heads, slip on the ladder, or otherwise injure themselves? Sure. But the same is true of any loft bed or bunk bed. The value of this design is that it wasn't close to the ceiling fan & didn't take up as much space as a standard-sized bunk would have.
Good luck to everyone addressing the space challenges in your homes- hope you find creative ways to make it work!
